Shellfish aquaculture is the only primary industry in New Zealand that still relies on wild seed for on-growing. New Zealand has successfully domesticated many commercial crops, and New Zealand’s shellfish industry will be the world’s first to benefit from total domestication.
One key element of total domestication is the ability to produce seed (spat) for commercial-scale on-growing. We have proven this ability for mussels, oysters and paua, and we are in the process of converting this knowledge into technology that is applicable at industrial scale.
